Use these questions before moving a seven-figure portfolio.
A good HNW advisor should make tradeoffs explicit. A weak one hides behind brand, credentials, or vague portfolio language.
Ask for specifics
- What is the all-in fee at my asset level, including fund expenses and platform costs?
- How do you coordinate with my CPA and estate attorney during the year?
- Which accounts should hold bonds, equity, alternatives, and cash reserves?
- When does direct indexing help, and when is it not worth the added complexity?
- How would you handle a concentrated stock position or large embedded capital gains?
- Are you fee-only, and will you put fiduciary status in writing?
Red flag: an advisor who leads with performance claims but cannot show the tax, fee, and estate mechanics behind the recommendation.
